I was so excited when this expecting mom contacted me for some maternity and newborn photos. We spoke on the phone during our consultation and she explained she wanted something unique for her maternity session: a winter photoshoot in the snow! I thought it was a wonderful idea, but at this point it was January in Toronto with no snow on the ground yet... so we waited until the perfect day. In the mean time we did a few in-studio maternity portraits with her husband and included the ultrasound photo and some itty-bitty shoes they had bought for their baby boy.
A few weeks later, it finally snowed and it was beautiful - but COLD! It was minus -16 degrees, but we braved the snow and got some beautiful backlight sun during our afternoon shoot at the park near Humber River. The sun and fresh white snow really highlighted her gorgeous belly against her black shirt and fur shall. A few photos even captured a rainbow sun-flare that makes it all seem so magical.
It was so cold that my camera actually stopped working at one point, so we warmed up in the car for a few minutes and then continued with some more maternity portraits.
Here are a few of my favourites from their outdoor maternity session at James Gardens Park in Etobicoke. I can't wait to meet the newest addition of their family and find out the baby's name (they have been keeping it a secret from everyone).

The best time for newborn photography between 5-15 days old. Its best too book in your second trimester (along with your maternity session) as I only book a limited number of newborn sessions per month to be able to accommodate changes in timing, as babies almost never arrive on their due date!
